Surface Root Chasing

Runner roots lifting your lawn, driveway or sidewalk ground out along their length.

Big maples and silver poplars send surface roots crawling across the yard — they scalp under the mower and heave concrete. We chase and grind those runners back below grade so the lawn mows flat again.

Root chasing is its own skill: follow the runner with the wheel, stay shallow enough to miss what is buried, deep enough that the root dies back. Metro Detroit's silver maples are the usual offender — fast growers with roots that surface twenty feet from the trunk.

What's included

  • Roots traced and marked before cutting
  • Runners ground below mowing height
  • Trenches raked, filled and seeded-ready
  • Honest advice when the tree itself is the problem

When to call us

The mower keeps hitting roots

Scalped stripes across the lawn every summer mean surface runners. Grinding them ends it.

The sidewalk or drive is heaving

A root under a slab only pushes harder every year. Cut the supply line before repouring.

Roots reached the foundation bed

Runners in the planting bed against the house steal water and lift edging. We push them back.

After a stump grind

Grinding the stump kills the tree, but established runners can still lift turf for years. Chase them once, done.
