How it works

Four steps, no runaround

Most customers go from photo to finished yard inside a week.

  1. 01

    Send a photo

Text or email a picture of the stump with a shoe or a bucket next to it for scale, plus your address. That is usually everything we need.

  2. 02

    Get a free quote

A firm price comes back within 24–48 hours. Diameter, access and whether you want the chips hauled are what move the number.

  3. 03

    We locate and grind

Utilities get located before the teeth go in the ground. On grind day we protect the turf, cut the stump below grade and check the depth.

  4. 04

    Cleanup, then you approve

Grindings raked and leveled, hard surfaces blown off, debris hauled if you asked for it. You look it over before we load up.

Common questions

Straight answers before you call

How much does stump grinding cost?

Price follows the diameter of the stump measured at ground level, how hard it is to get the machine to it, and whether you want the grindings hauled away. Small yard stumps land at the low end, big multi-trunk maples with a tight gate at the high end, and multiple stumps in one trip drop the per-stump price a lot. Send a photo and you will have a firm number back in 24–48 hours — free.

How deep do you grind?

Six to twelve inches below grade for a standard grind, which is past the point where anything regrows and deep enough for sod, seed or mulch. If you are planting a new tree or pouring concrete in the same spot, tell us up front — that job needs the chips and root plate removed and the hole backfilled, not just a grind.

What happens to the wood chips?

Grinding produces a pile of chips mixed with soil. By default we rake them back into the hole and level them off, which is what most homeowners want and what settles into good planting soil. If you want the chips gone, we can haul them, and plenty of customers keep them for mulch on beds and paths.

Do I need to call MISS DIG before you come out?

You do not — we handle the utility locate. Michigan law requires a locate request before mechanized digging, and MISS DIG 811 marks public utilities at no charge. Worth knowing: locates cover utility-owned lines, not private ones you or a previous owner installed, so flag any invisible fence, sprinkler line, low-voltage lighting or gas run to a garage or grill.

Will the grass grow back?

Yes. Once the chips are leveled the spot is ready for seed or sod. For the fastest fill-in, take a few inches of chips out, drop in topsoil, then seed — chips alone are slow to establish grass because they pull nitrogen as they break down.
